    Air pollution kills well below European Union air quality limits

    Prolonged exposure to tiny particles of soot or dust found in traffic fumes and industrial emissions may be more deadly below current European Union (EU) air quality limits than previously thought, according to new research examining two decades of data from over 360 000 residents of large cities in 13 European countries.

    Statistics incorporates uncertainty, are not exact mathematics

    In the framework of Science Week, on 28 November, Dr. Xavier Basagaña, CREAL researcher, gave the workshop "How to Survive a scientific statistics" at the College of Journalists of Catalonia. During the event, he explained how statistics help researchers in developing research and interpret their results as well as how journalists can avoid misinterpretations.

    MCC-Spain analyzes data cancers studied during the past six year

    On 25 and 26 November CREAL , in collaboration with the Institute of Health Carlos III, organized the sixth annual meeting of all research centers involved in the research project MCC -Spain, studying the causes of various cancers ( colorectal , breast, stomach , prostate and chronic lymphocytic leukemia). This year a total of 50 researchers from 17 CIBERESP centers (Epidemiology and Public Health) met at the National School of Health of the Instituto de Salud Carlos III.

    Up to 2% of childhood leukaemia in Europe may be caused by exposure to extremely low frequency magnetic fields

    1.5-2% of childhood leukaemia cases in Europe are potentially attributable to exposure to the extremely low frequency magnetic fields (ELF MF) associated with 50Hz alternating current (AC) electricity. Such are the results of a study carried out by Dr. James Grellier and Prof. Elisabeth Cardis of the Radiation Programme at CREAL, a member of the ISGlobal Alliance, under the auspices of the European Health Risk Assessment Network on Electromagnetic Fields Exposure (EFHRAN) project which was funded by the European Commission.

    Shift work and breast cancer risk: is there a link?

    Several studies, mostly among female nurses, have suggested that night shift work is a risk factor for breast cancer. One of the main mechanisms underlying this association is the light induced suppression of melatonin, a hormone that protects against cancer that is normally produced at night while we sleep. Other mechanisms include circadian disruption (disruption of daily biological rhythms) and sleep deprivation.

    The long-term breastfeeding improves the neurodevelopment of children

    The full breastfeeding between 6 until 12 months of children is related to better development of cognitive functions of children at 4 years of age. However, the difficulties in understanding what factors are involved in the benefit of breastfeeding. According to a study of the CREAL, centre of research of ISGlobal alliance, maternal indicators of intelligence, psychopathology, social class and colostrum n3 fatty acids did not explain this association.

    Yesterday the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL) held on its Annual Retreat. The meeting was held at the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB) and will involved all CREAL staff.
