In appreciation of Norman Breslow

Dr. Norman Breslow, one of the leaders of the modern field of biostatistics, passed away December 9 after a long illness. Norman was Professor Emeritus of Biostatistics in the School of Public Health, University of Washington and a long term collaborator of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) at Lyon.

Norman will be remembered as a major figure in medical statistics, who contributed through original research to transform the analysis of epidemiological studies from an essentially empirical approach to a coherent body of rigorously based methods. Much of what is today embodied in the sophisticated computer packages for analyzing epidemiological data rests on the foundations that he and other statisticians built.

Norman together with Nick Day, produced in the 1980s a landmark book on Statistical Methods in Cancer Research in two volumes, one on case–control studies and one cohort studies.

Many of us at CREAL had come to know Norman, followed his teaching and  worked with him. We send all our sympathy to his wife Gayle and their family.
