Air pollution in 'Pint of Science'

Raül Toran. Barcelona, May 22th, 2015.- Researchers from CREAL, an ISGlobal alliance center, presented the latest research on air pollution and its effects on health in the pub Cara B (C/Torren de les Flors, 36) in Barcelona within the international festival 'Pint of Science'.

Between 18th and 20th May, scientists from various research centers and universities from Barcelona bring science to the bars through international 'Pint of Science' festival, held in over 60 cities in several countries.

On 20th May, the pub Cara B focused its 'Pint of Science' on "The air of Barcelona" to talk about pollution, its main sources and effects on our health. In a crowded bar the first to speak was the researcher David Rojas with the talk "Air Pollution and Health", explaining that "the main source of air pollution are motor vehicles. Barcelona fails in NOx concentrations indicated by the European Union", adding "we see that the main routes of communication and transportation in Barcelona are the areas with higher pollution, as seen in existing pollution maps Barcelona that are public".

Later, Luis Matías from The Big Vang Theory group, offered a monologue focused on GM. He explained that "we should not be afraid to GM. We are eating transgenic plants from the last 40 years."

Finally, the researcher Joan Forns gave the talk "Which pollutants in the environment may affect child neuropsychological development" and explained that "we have studied the concentration and memory of children of 39 schools in Barcelona and Sant Cugat for a year and we have seen that in areas with more green spaces there is less pollution and the cognitive development of children is greater."

The audience, with a beer in the hand, actively participated in this event and asked the three speakers on pollution and transgenic plants. The organization very positively assessed attendance to all participating bars during the three days of this first edition. "We have been pleasantly surprised at the response from the public and media. This gives us courage to organize a new festival", said Eduardo Barriuso, coordinator of the bar "Planet Earth" and predoctoral researcher at the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC).

CREAL participation in this event is part of the activities marking the 10th anniversary of CREAL.

An international festival

Pint of Science is an international festival held since 2012. Since the first experience, held in London, the event has continued to grow. This year was held simultaneously in Australia, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain, UK and USA.
