MeDALL research project on allergic diseases holds its final meeting

On May 11-12, the final meeting of MeDALL will be held in Barcelona, Spain. MeDALL stands for Mechanisms of the Development of ALLergy and is an international four-year EU research project on the causes explaining the epidemic of allergic diseases.

Very recently two new MeDALL papers have been published. In one study MeDALL researchers assessed more than 17.000 children at 4 years and 14.500 at 8 years from 12 ongoing European population-based birth cohort studies conducted in Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, and Sweden. The study recorded information on allergic diseases from parents and doctors and collected IgE antibodies to six allergens in blood samples (sensitisation). The study showed at the population level, asthma, rhinitis, and eczema can be classified together as an allergic comorbidity cluster (Garcia-Aymerich J et al. Allergy. 2015 Apr 30). In another study, a review of MeDALL results and the literature puts forward the hypothesis that allergic multimorbidities and IgE polysensitization are associated and related to the persistence or re-occurrence of foetal Type 2 signalling (Bousquet J et al. Allergy. 2015 Apr 24).

During the two-day meeting with 70 participants, the project’s international researchers will give an update about their activities and achievements during the previous year through high profile presentations. Expert discussions will take place about the results and future research studies to be implemented.
