Workshop on drinking water contaminants to evaluate water disinfection options in light of the adverse side effects of chlorination

The workshop convened by the Water Research Program of CREAL will examine a series of issues:

What should policy makers in developed, intermediate and undeveloped countries do, if anything, to respond to epidemiological findings of adverse effects from the time-tested water sterilization technique of chlorination?

What process could be followed to explore the expensive and inexpensive alternatives to chlorination so that the resulting analysis is packaged in a way that is understandable to the responsible policy makers and covers the ethical and practical consequences of each option as seen by various stakeholders in the three types of countries?

Are there exemplary previous efforts from which we can learn? What political and procedural practices make such efforts trustworthy to all parties concerned?
What styles of analysis have worked in the past and what forms of packaging, and procedures for roll-out of results have worked and failed in the past?

It is intended to use the resulting understandings to guide a proposal for funding for assembling experts and stakeholders in a multi-year project to provide guidance to national policy makers on water sterilization procedures.
