CREAL participates in a scientific meeting about WHO Environmental Noise Guidelines

The Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL) has participated in the Evidence Review Meeting of the WHO Environmental Noise Guidelines for the European Region that took place from 29th September to 1st October 2014 in Bern (Switzerland). Specifically, Dr. Mark Nieuwenhuijsen, researcher and coordinator of the research program of air pollution at CREAL, an ISGlobal research center, takes part of the GDG.

In this meeting also participated Dr. Maria Foraster, who was formed and worked many years at CREAL and now is working at the Swiss Tropical Public Health Basel (Switzerland).

The WHO Regional Office is developing these Guidelines as a regional update to the WHO Community Noise Guidelines in order to provide policy-makers of WHO Member States with scientific evidence and recommendations for the protection from the health effects of environmental noise. Therefore, the Group has created a Guideline Development Group (GDG), which is an external expert group leading the process to develop the evidence-based recommendations, which met for the first time on 14 and 15 November 2013, in Bonn, (Germany).

According to the European Union, more than 45% of the European population and 65% of the Spanish population living in agglomerations with more than 250,000 inhabitants (a total of 110 million people) is exposed to noise levels of daily traffic more or equal to 55 decibels. These levels are above 50 decibels indicated by the European Environment Agency as the optimal level of total noise. Several scientific studies have shown that noise affects our physical and mental health.
