The ISGlobal Alliance Takes a Firm Step Forward Thanks to Renewed Funding From the Catalan Government

The ISGlobal alliance, formed by the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL), the Barcelona Centre for International Health Research (CRESIB) and the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), takes a firm step forward following confirmation of renewed funding from the Catalan Government’s SUMA programme, designed to achieve critical mass and foster excellence within the Catalan network of research centres, CERCA. The main goal of the alliance, which was founded in 2013, is to forge a basic and translational global health research centre with sufficient critical mass to lead the way in the battle against international health problems such as infectious and non-communicable diseases and their environmental determinants.

With the renewed funding from the SUMA programme, CREAL, CRESIB and ISGlobal will be able to take key steps towards strengthening the alliance, which is already firmly in place, and ensuring its success and viability. Some of the proposals already on the table for this new integration phase are advisory support for the design of the overall strategic plan, technical support for the design of a functional plan for shared facilities, the development of a joint IT system, a bibliometric analysis, advisory support for defining a joint publication process, renewal of the intramural programme for collaborative research, and support for international cooperation in global and environmental health by means of knowledge transfer.

The members of the ISGlobal alliance forged strong ties in 2013 and made significant progress in laying the foundations for the creation of a cohesive, efficient and sustainable organisational model. The alliance also designed a joint research strategy promoting synergies between existing programmes and the transfer of knowledge to inform public health policies and interventions. Finally, it made progress in expanding its provision of quality, ongoing postgraduate training in global and environmental health and strengthened its capacity to shape the international agenda in its areas of excellence.
