Marie Pedersen receives three awards during ISEE 2013

The International Society for Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE) has awarded the CREAL researcher Marie Pedersen recognizing her scientific work focused on birth weight. It’s the second consecutive year a CREAL researcher is recognized by ISEE. In fact, in 2012 Payam Dadvand received the Rebecca James Baker award and the Best New Researcher Abstract Award.

The awards that Marie Pedersen received this August during ISEE celebrated in Basel (Switzerland) are:

  • The Best Environmental Epidemiological Paper of 2012 for the NewGeneris acrylamide birth weight paper. This paper relies on data from five countries, including data from INMA project (Sabadell and Hospital del Mar). The publication “Birth Weight, Head Circumference, and Prenatal Exposure to Acrylamide from Maternal Diet: The European Prospective Mother – Child Study (NewGeneris)” conclude that the intake of foods high in acrylamide during pregnancy is associated with lower birth weight and smaller head circumference. This was revealed in an international study of the diet of 1,100 pregnant women and newborns from Denmark, England, Greece, Norway and Spain. This article was selected for this award by a Committee after a rigorous review of a short-list of more than 25 papers nominated by journal editors, identified through a screening of multiple journals by committee members and from nominations by ISEE members.

  • The Rebecca James Baker award. This award goes to a young researcher and it is based on a statement summarizing my work, the abstract submitted and two letters of support. The organization has recognized her work, her commitment to the principles outlined in the prize criteria, and strong letters of recommendation. “We feel that your work and approach to life honors the memory of Rebecca and reflects the principles that she believed in and worked toward”, explained the committee.
In fact, to honor Rebecca's memory and to encourage students and new investigators to follow her example, the Rebecca James Baker Award is given each year at the ISEE annual conference. Graduate level students and new investigators who are within three years of having completed their degree are invited to apply.
  • Outstanding abstract by a new investigator. Marie Pedersen received this award for the ESCAPE birth weight abstract. You can consult the abstract, clicking here.
