Irene Eleta

Irene Eleta is a postdoctoral researcher and Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellow. She obtained a Ph.D. in Information Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park (U.S.), a master in Multilingual Information Management at the University of Sheffield (U.K.) and a bachelor in Translation and Interpretation at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. She was awarded a Fulbright scholarship and the Yahoo! Key scientific challenges award for her doctoral studies and research. Her experience includes a short research stay at the Institute for Environment and Sustainability of the European Commission Joint Research Centre (Ispra, Italy) and, also, she has worked as sworn and specialized translator of English and Spanish.


Irene Eleta is investigating public participation in science, citizen science, for evaluating air quality. She is leading the project ESAIRE ( ) with Mark Nieuwenhuijsen. Her work involves coordinating with stakeholders for building community, organizing collaborative sessions between civil society associations and scientists, scientific communication for the general public, and applying participatory methods to system design for air quality evaluation (sensors, online platforms, mobile applications).

She has previous research experience in technology-mediated public participation, social network analysis, multilingual communication and information access. She combines methods from Social Sciences, Information Sciences, and Technology design, and applies them for improving public engagement with Science, the Environment, Public Health, and Art.
